Deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage is a firm, focused treatment that works the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release chronic tension. It is the right choice when the tightness sits deep, keeps coming back, and lighter massage only touches the surface. At RMT Metrotown in Metrotown, every deep tissue session is done by a registered massage therapist.

Who deep tissue massage helps

This treatment suits people carrying long-standing tension rather than the odd sore day. It tends to help if you:

  • Sit at a desk and feel it in your neck, shoulders and upper back
  • Have knots or trigger points that keep returning
  • Do physical work or heavy training that loads the same muscles
  • Have chronic stiffness in the lower back, hips or legs

If your pain is sharp, recent or injury-related, tell us when you book, since a therapeutic or sports approach may suit you better.

What to expect in your session

Your therapist starts by asking where the tension is and how long it has been there, then checks how you move. The massage uses slower, firmer pressure than a relaxation treatment, working into the deeper tissue rather than gliding over it. Deep work can feel intense in the moment, but it should never cross into pain you are bracing against. We check in as we go and adjust the pressure to what your body actually wants.

Afterwards you might feel a little tender for a day, similar to after a good workout. Drinking water and moving gently helps.

Is deep tissue massage covered by insurance?

Massage therapy from a registered therapist is covered by most extended health plans, and we direct bill the major providers. If you are recovering from a car accident, deep tissue work can be part of an ICBC claim, and you do not need a referral to start. Bring your plan or claim details and we will handle the billing.

Common questions about deep tissue massage

Does deep tissue massage hurt?

It can feel intense where a muscle is tight, but it should stay in the range of good discomfort, not pain. Your therapist adjusts the pressure to you.

How often should I come?

For chronic tension, every one to two weeks at first often works well, then less often as things settle. Your therapist will suggest a rhythm based on what they find.

Deep tissue or therapeutic massage: which do I need?

If you want firm general work on tight muscles, deep tissue fits. If you have a specific condition or injury, therapeutic massage may be the better starting point. Unsure? Book either and your therapist will steer the session.
