Therapeutic and clinical massage

Therapeutic massage is treatment aimed at a specific problem rather than general relaxation. Your therapist assesses what is going on, then uses focused techniques to address the cause, whether that is postural pain, a recurring condition or restricted movement. At RMT Metrotown in Metrotown, every therapeutic session is delivered by a registered massage therapist.

What therapeutic massage treats

This is the treatment to book when something specific is wrong and you want it worked on directly. It commonly helps with:

  • Chronic neck, back and shoulder pain
  • Postural strain from desk work or repetitive tasks
  • Tension headaches
  • Reduced range of motion in a joint or muscle group
  • Recovery from an injury, alongside other care

How a therapeutic session works

Your therapist starts with an assessment: what hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how the area moves. From there the treatment is built around findings, not a fixed routine. That might mean trigger point work, focused deep tissue, stretching, or a mix. You will usually leave with a couple of simple exercises or adjustments to help between visits, since what you do outside the clinic shapes how well the treatment holds.

Is therapeutic massage covered?

Yes. Massage therapy from a registered therapist is covered by most extended health plans, and it can form part of an ICBC treatment plan after a car accident. We direct bill the major providers and bill ICBC directly.

Common questions about therapeutic massage

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the problem and how long it has been there. Your therapist will give you a realistic estimate after the first assessment rather than a one-size answer.

Will you give me exercises to do at home?

Usually, yes. A few targeted movements between visits often make the difference between short relief and lasting change.

What if massage is not the right treatment for me?

If your therapist thinks another professional should be involved, they will tell you and point you in the right direction. Honest advice is part of the job.
